This workshop will explore an integrative approach to using play therapy with victims of childhood abuse and trauma. Research and literature describing trauma’s impact on the brain, treatment of posttraumatic stress, and trauma-informed treatment will be reviewed. The use of posttraumatic play and directive play therapy interventions will be discussed. Components of evidence-based treatments will be utilized to provide a foundation for play therapy interventions. Clinical examples will be provided. Lecture, experiential activities, group discussion, and case examples will provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience.

  LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of this program participants will:

  • Define integrative play therapy
  • Describe how posttraumatic play can be used in clinical practice with children who have been abused and traumatized
  • Identify 3 core components of trauma treatment as defined by the National Child
    Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) which can serve to ground play therapy
    interventions
  • Identify a minimum of ten play-based interventions to use in clinical practice with children and adolescents who have been victims of childhood abuse and trauma
  • Discuss cultural consideration which impact play therapy treatment with abused and traumatized
  • Discuss 1-2 areas of special consideration when working with with abused and traumatized children and adolescents who are receiving play therapy.
Presenter's Biography

Sueann Kenney-Noziska, MSW, LCSW, RPT-S, is a Licensed Clinical Social
Worker and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor with over 20 years of experience in the field who specializes in using play therapy in clinical practice with abused and traumatized children, adolescents, and their families. As part of her clinical work, she provides outpatient psychotherapy to those impacted by childhood abuse, maltreatment, and other traumatic
events. Sueann is internationally recognized and has presented throughout the United States as well as across the globe including places such as Japan, China, Jamaica, Estonia, and England. She has developed many trauma-informed interventions for clinical work with abused and traumatized children and adolescents, is a contributing author to multiple publications, and has testified as an expert witness in the areas of child abuse and trauma at both the state and federal level. Sueann serves on the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect’s (ISPCAN) working group on child sexual victimization, exploitation, and trafficking, is a participant in the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children’s (APSAC) children’s mental health section group, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Family Advocacy and Outreach Network.

Cancellation Policy

A cancellation request must be received in writing postmarked no later than November 3, 2022 to receive a refund and is subject to a $20 processing fee.  No refunds after November 3, 2022. Full refund will be given if the workshop is cancelled.

 

This training course is recommended for individuals who are beginning their play therapy training process. (0-35 prior APT approved training hours completed). This training is not sufficient for registration as a Play Therapist in the United States. However, those who complete the training will be well prepared to begin conducting play therapy sessions under supervision and will be equipped for additional, more advanced training opportunities.
